Description
Alsobia dianthiflora, formerly Episcia dianthiflora, is a flat ground cover from Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. The small runner-forming species belongs to the Gesneriad family and prefers tropical and subtropical terrariums. The fleshy and hairy leaves form a velvety green carpet. The plant can also be grown hanging. Its white flowers have fringed edges and the A. dianthiflora likes to hide them under its beautiful foliage.
Alsobia dianthiflora prefers to be grown in moderately moist, humus-rich soil. Watering should be done with soft water, e.g. rainwater. Waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. For optimal conditions, high humidity, combined with good air circulation, is necessary. Propagation is achieved by cutting off rooted runners or head cuttings.
Alsobia dianthiflora is a beautiful ground cover, ideal for rainforest terrariums. It forms dense, fluffy cushions, but the plant also looks beautiful on walls in small terraces with its rich green colouring.
