Description
Alternanthera bettzickiana is sometimes sold for aquariums, but unlike Alternanthera reineckii, it cannot grow under water. Contrary to what is often claimed, it is also not a marsh plant. This parrot leaf species probably originates from Brazil and is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, in the tropics also as a medicinal and vegetable plant, even as a ground cover in plantations to prevent soil erosion. It grows best in tropical climates in nutrient-rich, loose, humus-rich, evenly moist soil in full sun. There are green and many variegated cultivars, which are also used in colder climates for ornamental carpet garden beds in summer. This herbaceous plant from the Amaranthus family can be pruned to form a small hedge. The branched shoots of Alternanthera bettzickiana 'Green' form bushes up to approx. 15 cm high. The leaves are light to medium green, egg-shaped, with a stem about 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide.
The Green Hedge prefers warmer temperatures above 20 °C, a bright place, a good supply of nutrients and a moderately moist substrate that should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. Several plants can be planted with little distance from each other to form a carpet. They can be shaped by pruning. Propagation is by means of cuttings.
Alternanthera bettzickiana 'Green' can be used in a variety of ways in well-lit tropical and subtropical terrariums as a smaller ground plant, as an accent or as a carpet that can be kept low by pruning.
