Description
This small Anubias is an interesting selection of the well-known dwarf spear leaf, Anubias barteri var. nana. It is also sold under other names such as Anubias sp. 'Gold'. The youngest leaves in particular have a light, lemon-yellow colour, which changes to light to medium green in older leaves.
Young plants of Anubias barteri var. nana 'Golden Heart' from tissue culture cups often have white spotting on a yellow-green background. According to our observations, older plants grown in the aquarium no longer develop this variegation.
'Golden Heart' is just as undemanding and robust as the parent form of the nana variety, but grows more slowly and should not be provided with too little light. A complete supply of macro and micronutrients via the water column is recommended. The addition of CO2 is not a must, but promotes growth greatly. Like other forms of Anubias barteri, the cultivar 'Golden Heart' is primarily a perching plant that attaches itself to hard substrates such as stone and wood with its roots. However, it can also be attached to the substrate, although the rhizome should not be buried as it could otherwise rot.
Perching plants for the hardscape usually have dark to medium green colours, but Anubias barteri var. nana 'Golden Heart' is an exception with its yellow and light green tones. It forms a beautiful contrast to dark backgrounds or dark green plants and mosses.
