Description
'Parvati', also known as 'Austral Gem', is a strikingly beautiful hybrid of the spleenwort species Asplenium dimorphum and A. difforme, bred by Chris Goudey in Victoria, Australia. Both parent species are native to Norfolk Island, thriving in the undergrowth of subtropical rainforests. This fern features triangular, horizontally spread, long-lasting fronds that emerge from a short-creeping, branched rhizome. The fronds are medium green, very firm, covered with a waxy layer that imparts a glossy appearance. Spore-bearing fronds have narrower pinnae compared to the sterile (sporeless) fronds. Over time, the plant can form a bush approximately 50 cm in height and width. However, younger plants sourced from nurseries initially are about 20 cm high and 30 cm wide.
This subtropical, evergreen spleenwort thrives in loose, humus-rich substrate that is kept consistently slightly moist, without becoming either dried out or waterlogged. It grows even in low light or shadow, but performs better in moderately bright conditions, in daylight cultivation without full sun. Once established, the plant can occasionally be fed with a green plant fertilizer. A humidity level of at least 60% and temperatures between approximately 15 - 28 °C are recommended. Propagation is achieved by dividing the rhizome of older plants.
Asplenium dimorphum × difforme 'Parvati' creates a forest-like atmosphere on the floor of larger subtropical and tropical terrariums. Its spread-out, finely feathered yet robust fern fronds are not only visually captivating but also provide natural cover for terrarium animals.
