Description

Bulbophyllum falcatum is a fascinating small orchid native to tropical Africa. It grows epiphytically on trees across a vast region from West to Central Africa and as far southwestern Kenya. The plant forms a creeping rhizome with pseudobulbs, each bearing two approximately 10 - 12 cm long leathery, medium green leaves. The peculiar inflorescences emerge in spring to summer. These feature a 6 - 15 cm long peduncle with a laterally flat, slightly sickle-shaped, purple-brown coloured, 6 - 14 cm long axis (rachis). On either side of the rachis is a row of small yellow-red flowers.

In terms of cultivation requirements, Bulbophyllum falcatum is similar to many other epiphytic orchids. It can be mounted on wood or cork along with some substrate such as epiphyte soil or sphagnum moss, or planted in pots. For pot culture, only a small amount of coarse, permeable substrate such as a bark mix or coconut husk chips should be used. A bright, humid location with temperatures between approximately 18 and 28 °C is recommended. Watering is achieved by regularly misting the roots with soft water, and the plant can also be dipped if possible. Approximately once a month, orchid fertilizer can be added to the water. Propagation is done by cutting the creeping rhizomes. Cut pieces with at least 2 pseudobulbs, which can then be remounted or potted.

This orchid wild type is a plant that demands up-close appreciation. With its unusually shaped flower spikes and tiny, contrasting coloured flowers, it creates an interesting accent in tropical terrariums. Mounted on branches and trunks, back and side walls, it makes for an easy-to-maintain terrarium plant.
