Description

Bulbophyllum falcatum var. bufo is a small orchid from tropical Africa. This variety remains smaller and grows more compactly than typical Bulbophyllum falcatum. It grows as an epiphyte on trees in West and Central Africa, extending eastward to Uganda. The plant forms a short, creeping rhizome with pseudobulbs that are only a few millimetres apart, each bearing two approximately 8 - 9 cm long leathery, medium green leaves. The peculiar flower spikes appear from spring to summer. A stem bears a laterally flat, slightly sickle-shaped, purple-brown coloured axis (rachis). On either side of the rachis is a row of small brown-red flowers with yellow markings.

In terms of cultivation requirements, Bulbophyllum falcatum var. bufo is similar to many other epiphytic orchids. It can be mounted on wood or cork along with some substrate such as epiphyte soil or sphagnum moss, or planted in pots. For pot culture, only a small amount of coarse, well-drained substrate such as a bark mix or coconut husk chips should be used. A half-shady to bright, humid location with temperatures between approximately 18 and 28 °C is recommended. Watering is achieved by regularly misting the roots with soft water, and the plant can also be submerged if possible. Approximately once a month, orchid fertilizer can be added to the water. Propagation is done by cutting the creeping rhizomes. Cut pieces with at least 2 pseudobulbs, which can then be remounted or potted.

This miniature orchid is a plant that demands up-close appreciation. With its unusually shaped flower spikes and tiny flowers, it creates an interesting accent in tropical terrariums, also in small enclosures such as biOrb. Mounted on branches and trunks, back and side walls, it makes for an easy-to-maintain terrarium plant.
