Description

This epiphytic bromeliad is better known as Nidularium citrinum or N. billbergioides var. citrinum. Canistropsis billbergioides is native to the Atlantic coastal rainforest (Mata Atlântica) from northeast to southeast Brazil, at altitudes of about 500 - 1500 m above sea level. It is a tank bromeliad; water collects in the rosette of relatively soft, smooth leaves. The inflorescence is a rosette of bracts and sits on a short stem. The plant continuously develops daughter rosettes on stolons at the base.
There are variously coloured forms of Canistropsis billbergioides. Plants supplied as Nidularium 'Citrinum', also known as 'Citron', have inflorescences with yellow bracts. The leaves are plain green or variably variegated with white longitudinal stripes.
This bromeliad grows to around 40 cm wide and up to 60 cm high with inflorescence, but the plants supplied are not yet fully grown and are around 15 - 30 cm high.

Canistropsis billbergioides is described as a rather easy bromeliad species. As an epiphyte, it needs a substrate such as epiphyte soil or moss in which it can root. It also thrives in pots or on the ground in a loose, well-drained substrate. The substrate should be kept slightly moist with soft water; waterlogging should be avoided. The leaf cisterns can be filled with water, but this should be renewed occasionally. The runner plants can be separated for propagation and re-tied or replanted. If you leave them as they are, a larger clump will develop over time.

This medium-sized bromeliad is versatile and can be used as an epiphyte or ground plant for tropical terrariums that are not too dry, especially rainforest terrariums. With its light to medium green leaves and lively yellow inflorescences, Canistropsis billbergioides 'Citron' ('Citrinum') brings bright colours to the terrarium planting.
