Description

Cattleya is certainly the most famous orchid genus, which is reflected in the name "Queen of Orchids". In the 19th century, Cattleya orchids became prestigious objects in wealthy circles. The more than 130 Cattleya species are widespread in tropical forests from Costa Rica to Argentina, especially Brazil, as epiphytes and ground orchids. Countless cultivars have been bred through cross-breeding, including with species from related genera such as Brassavola and Rhyncholaelia. Nurseries often send out a mixture of different, beautifully flowering cultivars that are not individually named. Accordingly, Aquasabi also offers a mixture of cultivars under the name Cattleya Hybrid. It is not known in advance which specific cultivar will be shipped.
Slender pseudobulbs with one or two elongate-ovate, firm, thick leaves develop on a rhizome with thick, gray-green aerial and adhesive roots. The plant without flowers is about 30 cm high. The inflorescence with several flower buds appears in a leaf axil at the tip of the pseudobulb. The flowering period is usually in winter to early spring. The long-lasting, multicolored flowers, which grow to around 15 cm, sometimes have a delicate fragrance. Depending on the cultivar, they can be white, pink, magenta, violet, red, yellow, orange or brown. The common name "Hooded orchids" for Cattleya refers to the shape of the strikingly large flower lip.

Like their parent species, Cattleya hybrids are primarily epiphytic plants with adhesive roots. However, they can also be kept in a loose orchid substrate in a pot. Water regularly by spraying or dipping with soft water, but avoid waterlogging. The substrate should be allowed to dry off between waterings. An orchid fertilizer can be added to the water about once a month. Cattleya hybrids are tropical orchids that need to be kept warm, but a cooler, drier period in winter promotes flower formation. Do not fertilize during this time. Lowering the temperature at night is also beneficial for Cattleya, as for practically all orchids.

In larger terrariums, Cattleya cultivars are among the most magnificently flowering plants of all.Together with other eye-catching plant shapes, such as bromeliads, ferns and large-leaved climbing plants, colorful blooming Cattleya hybrids convey the exoticism and lushness of a tropical garden.
