Description

This small, delicate orchid species with orange-red flowers originates from tropical forests in the Philippines, from lowland to about 500 m above sea level. Ceratostylis retisquama grows as an epiphyte on sun-exposed trees. The species is also known as Ceratostylis rubra. Over time, the plant forms a dense mat. The leaves, up to 14 cm long, are linear, slightly curved like a sickle and thick, firm, with a channeled upper side. The stems or rhizomes are covered with reddish-brown leaf sheaths. The star-shaped flowers emerge individually from these, are about 3 cm wide and last about 7 to 12 days each.

Ceratostylis retisquama is a recommendable, easy to keep perching plant for bright places in tropical terrariums. With its mat-shaped growth and bright orange-red flowers, it attracts attention.
