Description
This small, robust pinnate palm is the most popular and common indoor palm. Chamaedorea elegans comes from the undergrowth of humid forests from Mexico to Honduras, often growing above limestone. The Parlor palm grows with several stems, the slender trunk can reach a height of 3 m in nature. As an indoor and terrarium plant, it remains much smaller.
Chamaedorea elegans grows in any well-drained, slightly alkaline to slightly acid soil. This should be kept moderately moist, can temporarily become a little drier, but should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. When the plant is well developed, it can be supplied with a fertiliser for house plants. Cooler wintering is favourable, but not a must; then the parlor palm should be kept a little drier and not be fertilised. The light requirement is low, but a bright position leads to stronger growth.
The Parlor palm or Mexican mountain palm is a tough, shade-tolerant terrarium plant that is well suited to rainforest or humid forest terrariums, but does not require humid environments. As a young plant it will make a pretty accent on the terrarium floor, while old specimens with their elegant leaf tufts on thin stems make an interesting solitary plant, especially in tall terrariums.
