Description
The Spider plant is one of the most popular and undemanding houseplants. South Africa is often named as the home of Chlorophytum comosum, but there are also plants classified as C. comosum in West, Central and especially East Africa. The grass-like looking plant grows on the grounds of forests and bushes. It forms leaf rosettes and long, prostrate or pendulous inflorescences with small white flowers and adventitious plants. There are several cultivars; C. comosum 'Variegatum' has white leaf margins.
Chlorophytum comosum is a very robust plant. It will grow in pretty much any soil that is kept moderately moist and will tolerate temporary drought but not permanently waterlogged soil. When it has fully established itself, it can be fed with a fertiliser for house plants. Hydroculture is also possible. The Spider plant needs little light, but grows more vigorously in a brighter spot. It is very temperature-tolerant, but stops growing below 10 °C and does not tolerate frost. It reproduces itself through the many young plants on the inflorescences, which can be cut off as soon as they appear strong enough. These can be placed directly in the soil where they take root.
The robust, shade-tolerant Spider plant is an ideal grass-like ground plant for various terrarium types, from rainforest to dry forest terrariums. With its arching leaves and pendulous inflorescences with tufts of young plantlets, it also works well on sloping to vertical structures such as back walls.
