Description

The Bichetii grass is better known as Chlorophytum bichetii, but is considered a white-variegated form of Chlorophytum laxum. This species of Spider plant has a wide distribution from tropical Africa to southern China and Australia. It occurs naturally in shady places and on rocky slopes. Chlorophytum laxum 'Bichetii' forms an approx. 20 to 40 cm wide, tufted rosette of grass-like leaves with a striking white margin. The roots have conspicuous elongated tubers. Occasionally, slender inflorescences with star-shaped white flowers appear. The inflorescences are shorter than those of Chlorophytum comosum and do not form adventitious plantlets.

Like the better-known Spider plant Chlorophytum comosum, C. laxum 'Bichetii' is a robust plant with no particular requirements in terms of light, temperature or substrate. The soil should be kept moderately moist; temporary dryness is tolerated, but not permanent waterlogging. Once the plant is established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. Hydroponics is also possible. The Bichetii grass needs little light, but grows more vigorously in a brighter spot. Temperatures are best between approx. 22 and 30 °C. Propagation takes place by splitting of older, multi-headed plants.

This robust tropical plant can be used in a variety of ways in tropical terrariums. Chlorophytum laxum 'Bichetii' with its striking white-edged, overhanging leaves not only looks decorative on the ground, but also on sloping to vertical structures such as back walls.
