Description
The "Croton" is an extremely diverse leaf ornamental plant, originally comes from the islands of Southeast Asia to Western Oceania and from Northeast Australia. In the tropics, it becomes a shrub up to about 3 meters high with leathery, 5 - 30 cm long leaves. There are many varieties with an incredible diversity in leaf colors, patterns, and shapes. 'Sunny Star' has lanceolate leaves with large bright yellow spots or zones on a green background. The plants we supply are around 20 cm tall, with leaves up to 15 cm long.
Codiaeum variegatum grows in well-drained soil. This soil should be kept slightly moist and should neither dry out nor become waterlogged. Hydroculture is also possible. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed with a green plant fertilizer. The temperature is best kept above 20 °C and should not fall below 16 °C for long periods. A bright spot without direct sunlight is recommended. Propagation is by cuttings. Codiaeum contains a slightly toxic latex that can cause skin irritation. Therefore, care should be taken when handling the plant.
Codiaeum variegatum 'Sunny Star' lives up to its name with its striking sun-yellow leaf pattern. In larger tropical terrariums, this Croton can be grown into a striking solitary plant. As a young plant, it can also be used in smaller containers and then forms an effective color accent.
