Description
The coffee shrub is cultivated in many countries today, but originally comes from tropical mountain forests in the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia. It grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree in the undergrowth and likes light shade. With its decorative glossy, dark green, hammered foliage, it is an attractive houseplant and terrarium plant.
Coffea arabica likes moderate light. The coffee plant grows best in loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that is kept fresh to moist and must neither become waterlogged nor dry out. Once the coffee bush has grown in, it can be fertilised with a complete houseplant fertiliser about every 14 days. If it only receives daylight, fertilise less frequently or not at all in the darker autumn and winter. It grows about 1.5 m tall indoors and can be pruned in the terrarium if it gets too tall. 20 to 25 °C are ideal, the temperature can also drop to 15 °C; at below 12 °C the coffee shrub sheds its leaves.
Coffea arabica is the perfect choice for terrariums that emulate a tropical mountain forest and is also suitable for rainforest terrariums in general. With its glossy, dark green foliage, the coffee shrub gives the impression of undergrowth in a tropical jungle.
