Description
The Hawaiian Ti plant or Cabbage palm is a palm-like tropical shrub that forms tufts of leaves on one or more upright stems. It originates from South-East Asia and was introduced as a cultivated plant on many Pacific islands. There are many cultivars of Cordyline fruticosa with different leaf colours and markings. 'Red Edge' has dark green glossy leaves with a splendid red margin.
The Ti plant has no special requirements and grows in any well-drained soil that is kept moderately moist. The plant does not tolerate waterlogging. Once it has grown in, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser and over time it forms a slender stem that can grow to over a metre tall and branch out. If the plant becomes too tall, the trunk can be cut off, which will then produce side shoots.
Cordyline fruticosa 'Red Edge' is recommended for taller terrariums. With its colourful leaves and tall, slender growth, it makes a magnificent specimen plant.
