Description
Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana, also known by names such as jade necklace and Chinese pagoda or the trade name Crassula 'Hottentot', is a fascinating member of the Stonecrop family. This bizarrely shaped plant originates from the rich succulent flora of the Cape Province in South Africa. It grows there at high altitudes on thin layers of soil over rocks, on ledges and in crevices. The plant forms up to 15 cm high clumps of ascending, prostrate or overhanging, approximately 2 cm wide shoots. The thick fleshy leaves are opposite and broadly fused at the base. As a result, the closely spaced pairs of leaves surrounding the thin stem look like pearls threaded onto a string. In bright light, the green leaves have a brown-red edge. In autumn, compact inflorescences with small, white, star-shaped flowers appear at the tips of the shoots.
This Crassulacean plant from open, rocky habitats also likes a very bright spot in the terrarium and can also tolerate full sun in daylight culture. A well-drained, sandy-gravelly substrate such as cactus and succulent soil is recommended. The water requirement should be somewhat higher than for other Crassula species, but as a water-retaining plant, the Buttons on a string is well adapted to temporary dry periods. The soil should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Cooler, drier conditions in winter are recommended. Propagation is easy by means of head and partial cuttings. Fragments of shoots with a single pair of leaves will also take root.
Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana is an exquisite small succulent for well-lit dry terrariums. Its drooping shoots look particularly beautiful in an elevated spot, such as on rock-like back walls. It can also be used to underplant larger succulents if it is not shaded too much. This thick-leaved species is not just a plant for succulent collectors, but also a living work of art for lovers of unique terrarium designs.
