Description
Although this attractive Cryptocoryne is sold as Cryptocoryne x purpurea, its inflorescences do not match C. x purpurea, but Cryptocoryne cordata var. siamensis. The plant also looks very similar to the Siamese water trumpet (former Dennerle short name C30), which we also offer. It differs from it by having rather dark olive-green, less brown-tinted leaves. These also have a special marbling and reddish-purple underside, and the stronger leaf veins are darker in colour than the leaf tissue between them.
Especially under intensive lighting, this Cryptocoryne initially forms a spreading rosette of leaves that hardly exceeds 10 cm. However, after a long time it can grow over 20 cm tall, especially in low light and with a good supply of nutrients. Young plants appear on underground stolons and in time a lush stand can grow. Inflorescences with a conspicuous yellow spathe and long tube form when the plant grows in shallow water or emersed.
This slow-growing Cryptocoryne can be kept in soft to hard water. It is particularly suitable for fish-stocked aquariums without added CO2, which are only dimly to moderately lit. However, the plant also thrives in intensive light and with added CO2. Nutrient supply via the substrate is very beneficial for its growth. The optimal temperature range for this tropical aquatic plant is between about 22 and 28 °C. Propagation is done by cutting off young plants that develop on the underground runners.
This plant, which we provisionally label Cryptocoryne "Purpurea" and which is actually a variant of Cryptocoryne cordata var. siamensis, forms a pretty accent in the foreground to middle ground with its spreading, olive-green leaf rosette. It is versatile and also a suitable plant for tropical river biotope aquariums. In open, shallow tanks, you can expect attractive inflorescences with yellow spathe.
This water trumpet was first found in Kota Tingii in western Malaysia, and in 1902 the director of the Botanical Garden Singapore, H.N. Ridley, described it as Cryptocoryne purpurea. In the 1960s, de Wit named it as most common aquarium plant in Europe and America. Today it has probably disappeared from aquarium cultivation, and it is only still cultivated by a few specialised hobbyists, mostly in the emersed form.
Typical C. x purpurea from the Malayan peninsula was identified in 1982 by Niels Jacobsen as a natural hybrid of C. cordata var. cordata and C. griffithii. The most well-known population of this crypt is the vast marshland of Tasek Bera in Pahang.
