Description
Somphong's water trumpet is a long known, well established and beautiful aquarium plant. Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae comes from calcareous rivers and streams in Thailand and some neighbouring countries. It is characterised by many flexible, long, ribbon-shaped leaves that are strongly hammered (bullate). This species is variable, there are forms with leaves up to 70 cm long and 4 cm wide. The most customary form has leaves up to over 40 cm long and about 1.5 to 2.5 cm wide. The colouring varies from olive green to reddish brown. Often the midrib and petioles are brown-pink. This Cryptocoryne forms a dense stand through underground runners over time. Fine roots often grow out of the substrate, which is normal for many Cryptocoryne species. The inflorescences have a conspicuous spirally twisted spathe and grow out of the water when the water level is low.
This narrow-leaved Cryptocoryne is robust and easy to care for. It grows at low to high carbonate hardness and pH values between about 6 and 8. The most favourable temperatures are between 20 and 28 °C. The light requirement is moderate. Addition of CO2 is not absolutely necessary, but promotes growth, as does nutrient supply via the substrate. Propagation is easy by cutting off young plants at the stolons in the soil.
Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae is very suitable for forming a dense stand in the aquarium background and also looks beautiful as a solitary bush in tall tanks. With its long and narrow-leaved growth habit, it is particularly well suited to aquariums with moving water that are designed to resemble a river biotope.
Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae is found in rivers and rivulets in southern Thailand, where this variety of C. crispatula forms dense, mostly submersed populations with bandlike leaves floating in the current. When the water is low, some of these plants fall dry and then form flowers. The habitats of this Cryptocoryne are often found in areas with limestone rocks, so the water is hard and rich in calcium.
C. crispatula var. balansae has been in the hobby for a long time, it is easy to cultivate and highly adaptable. It can grow to over 50 cm in height. There are different forms of var. balansae, one of the most common ones has leaves about 2 cm wide. However, leaf width can vary from 1.5 to 4 cm, and its colour may be anything between green and an attracive bronze hue.
A typical characteristic of C. crispatula var. balansae are the bullous leaves with a hammered look. (read more)
