Description
Cyrtomium fortunei, also known as Fortune's Holly Fern, originates from the temperate and subtropical regions of East Asia, particularly China and Japan. This species belongs to the Dryopteridaceae family and thrives in shaded to semi-shaded environments with consistently high humidity. It grows best in well-draining substrate and temperatures between 15 and 24°C. Due to its robust nature, Cyrtomium fortunei is ideal for humid, shaded terrariums, adding an evergreen, structured element. The fern tolerates low temperatures, making it well-suited for temperate and subtropical forest terrariums with cool winter periods, but it can also thrive in tropical setups.
The sickle-shaped, leathery leaves give the fern a distinctive appearance. Reaching a maximum height of around 60-90 cm, it is a perfect choice for medium to larger terrariums, where it can serve as both a structural element and a refuge for smaller animals. Its evergreen growth and easy care make it a long-lasting and decorative addition to terrariums that mimic moist, shaded forest habitats.
