Description

Dendrobium catenatum is a special, rarely cultivated wild type orchid. It originates from subtropical south-east China, Taiwan, Vietnam and southern Japan and is found in moderately moist mountain forests, as an epiphyte on trees or sitting on rock (epilithic). On a short rhizome with aerial and adhesive roots, several upright to arching shoots (canes) develop, about 3 to 32 cm long, which are initially covered with up to 12 lanceolate, dark green leaves. Over time, these canes become bare. The flowering period is in winter and spring. An inflorescence about 2 - 6 cm long with about 4 - 5 flowers develops in winter near the tip of leafless, 2 - 3 years old canes. The 3 cm wide flowers are greenish-yellow with dark red markings on the lip.

This small to moderately large, rare orchid from East Asian woodlands is particularly suitable for subtropical terrariums that are kept somewhat cooler and drier in the winter months. Dendrobium catenatum is recommended for mounting on branches, trunks, rocks, back and side walls. With its greenish-yellow flowers and dark green leaves, this species has a special subtle charm and is particularly suited to terrariums that are modelled on mountain forest wildernesses with rocks, mosses and ferns.
