Description

This orchid comes from central and southern China, Myanmar and northern Vietnam. It grows in the mountains up to 2200 m altitude, in humid, warm-temperate to subtropical climates, as an epiphyte on tree trunks or attached to rocks (lithophyte). The bamboo-like stems, which are the pseudobulbs and covered with narrow leaves up to about 7 cm long, grow from a rootstock with adhesive roots. On short side shoots 1 - 2 golden yellow, honey-scented, up to 4 cm wide flowers appear, in nature in early spring.

Dendrobium hancockii comes into its own in terrariums with its tall, bamboo-like shoots not only as a percher but also as a ground plant. This Far Eastern orchid is best suited to subtropical terrariums with drier, cooler periods in winter.
