Description
Dendrobium kingianum is a particularly pretty, pink and white flowering orchid species from Queensland and New South Wales in eastern Australia. In nature, it usually grows as a lithophyte on rocks, which is why it is called Pink Rock Orchid. This orchid is native to subtropical areas with warm, humid summers and dry, cool winters, where it flowers in the winter and spring months. It has a rootstock with adhesive roots and pseudobulbs about 12 cm high with broad-lanceolate leaves. The flowers appear on inflorescences that overhang the leaves. They are about 2,5 cm wide and have a characteristic, almost triangular shape. The outer petals have a colour gradient from white base to pink tip. The lip in the centre of the flower has a pink pattern of irregular spots and stripes on a white background.
Even though this small orchid wild type is a rock dweller by nature, it can also be used in the terrarium as an epiphyte on wood or cork bark or as a ground plant on orchid substrate. It is best suited to subtropical humid forest terrariums with a cooler, drier phase in winter.
