Description
Dendrobium mohlianum × cuthbertsonii is a small orchid hybrid, whose parent species originate from islands in Western Oceania on one hand, and the island of New Guinea on the other. Both occur naturally as epiphytes on trees or as lithophytes (sitting on rock) in tropical mountain forests, which have a cool-moist climate due to their altitude. The plant, about 10 - 15 cm high, forms a small rhizome with a number of distichously leafed, water-storing stems. The dark green leaves are up to about 3 cm long and have a rough surface with many tiny papillae. The flowers appear individually on short inflorescences. They are cream-yellow with an orange-red lip and about 3 - 4 cm wide.
This miniature orchid is an interesting epiphyte and lithophyte, suitable for rainforest terrariums and particularly recommended for cool temperate tropical mountain forest terrariums. It is also suitable for small enclosures like biOrb. With its beautifully coloured flowers, which are large in relation to the leaves, it forms a special accent during the flowering period.
