Description
Dendrobium rhodostictum is an enchanting orchid from Papua New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands. It grows in tropical montane rainforests at altitudes of 800-1200 metres as an epiphyte on trees or terrestrially on steep, damp, moss-covered slopes. The approximately 10-20 cm tall plant has a short rhizome with many adhesive and aerial roots and a cluster of elongated pseudobulbs, each with 1 to 4 leathery, dark green leaves up to about 8 cm long at the top. Around spring to late summer, a short to 7.5 cm long, upright to overhanging peduncle with 3 - 8 flowers appears at the tip of a pseudobulb. These are approx. 5 cm wide, waxy, white, with purple-red lines and dots on the lip.
The Red-spotted Dendrobium is a beautiful terrarium plant that combines rather small, compact growth with large, beautifully shaped flowers. It is particularly recommended as a perching plant for tropical rainforest or mountain forest terrariums, on epiphyte branches and trunks, on rocks or on back and side walls.
