Description
Dendrobium victoriae-reginae is a purple flowering orchid from the Philippines. It is named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The plant grows as an epiphyte in moderately warm to cool tropical mountain forests at 1.300 to 2.700 m altitude. There it sits on moss-covered trunks of stone oaks (Lithocarpus). Slender, more or less pendulous shoots, which are the pseudobulbs, grow on a rootstock. They have two rows of up to 12 lanceolate leaves and grow to about 60 cm long. On older leafless pseudobulbs a few flowers appear on very short inflorescences. The 3 - 4 cm wide flowers are purple to blue-violet with dark stripes and a white centre.
This hanging, splendidly flowering perching plant is particularly suitable for tropical mountain forest terrariums.
