Description
The Madagascar dragon tree is one of the most popular houseplants. It is commonly known as Dracaena marginata, but it is now considered a narrow-leaved variety of D. reflexa. It originates from Madagascar and surrounding islands of the Indian Ocean. In the tropics this Dracaena becomes a shrub or small tree with a slender trunk. The dark green, ribbon-shaped leaves grow to about 30 to 40 cm long and 2 cm wide. They have a dark reddish brown margin.
This narrow-leaved dragon tree is a robust plant. It will grow in any loose soil. This is kept moderately moist and can become a little dry temporarily, but must neither dry out completely nor be waterlogged. When the plant has grown in, it can be given a houseplant fertiliser. Hydroponics is also possible. The Madagascar dragin tree does not need a lot of light, but grows more vigorously in a bright place without full sun. The temperature is best at a minimum of 20 °C and should not drop below 16 °C for a longer period. Pruning encourages the formation of side shoots.
Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia is an ideal, robust plant, especially for higher tropical terrariums. As a young plant it makes a pretty accent at the bottom, and older specimens make striking specimen plants with their leaf tufts on slender stems that thicken towards the bottom.
