Description
Dracaena sanderiana originates from the humid tropics of Central Africa and is widespread worldwide as a tropical ornamental plant. This dragon tree species has in the meantime been synonymised with Dracaena braunii, but according to more recent information it is a separate species. Because of its lanceolate leaves and somewhat bamboo-like thin stems, the plant is called "lucky bamboo", but has nothing to do with bamboo species (from the grass family, Poaceae). While the wild type is pure dark green, there are various cultivars with white or yellow-coloured leaves. The cultivar 'Gold' has yellow longitudinal stripes. The stems, which are no more than 1.5 cm thick, can grow more than 2 metres tall, but then lie down if they are not supported. New shoots appear at the base of the plant. The leaves are about 35 cm long and 4 - 5 cm wide.
Dracaena sanderiana is an extremely robust plant that grows in any moderately moist soil at temperatures above 16 °C. It also thrives well in hydroponics; the shoots can simply be placed in water where they form roots. After pruning, side shoots sprout from the trunk. The light requirement is low, but the plant grows optimally in a bright place, but not in full sun when grown in daylight.
Dracaena sanderiana 'Gold' is an easy plant, best for taller terrariums. As a young plant it is suitable as an accent on the terrarium bottom, and older plants look bamboo-like with their thin stems that have become leafless in their lower parts.
