Description
In contrast to most other sundew species, Drosera adelae comes from the warm and humid tropical jungle. This exceptional species is one of the three so-named Queensland Droseras from the rainforests of northeastern Australia. It grows in the mountains at sandy stream edges between rocks. Its leaves are narrowly lanceolate, tightly covered with tentacles and arranged in a spreading, about 10 to 30 cm broad rosette, therefore it is a quite large sundew species. Its upright inflorescences bear a number of dark red star-shaped flowers. It is able to produce long root runners so that daughter rosettes may appear a bit away from the mother plant.
Drosera adelae thrives in nutrient-poor, acid substrates such as peat and sand mixture that can be wet, even shallowly inundated. It grows year-round and has no dormancy period. Higher humidity is beneficial. Occasional feeding with tiny insects such as Drosophila provides nutrients. The plant propagates itself by the mentioned long root runners, it can also be propagated by cuttings of the roots and leaves.
With its long, narrow leaves, the Lance-leaf sundew is a carnivorous plant with a particular shape. It draws attention in rainforest terrariums and paludariums. According to its natural habitat that is untypical to sundews, Drosera adelae fits well with setups that imitate stream margins in tropical rainforests.
