Description
The Cape sundew is an easy-to-grow carnivorous plant that is also recommended for beginners. As its name suggests, Drosera capensis originates from the Cape of Good Hope region in South Africa. It grows there in the so-called Fynbos region in nutrient-poor wetlands, swamps, lakeshores and watercourses. The leaf rosettes with short stems grow to a height of around 15 to 20 cm. The catch leaves, which are covered with many red, sticky tentacles, have a linear shape. If the plant thrives, it forms inflorescences up to about 30 cm high with many small purple flowers.
Like other Drosera species, Cape sundew needs an acidic, nutrient-poor, moist to wet substrate. The water should be soft, e.g. rainwater or reverse osmosis water. The plant catches small insects in particular, such as fungus gnats and fruit flies, from which it can cover its low nutrient requirements. It prefers a lot of light. This sundew comes from a subtropical climate with cool winters and hot summers; cooler overwintering is not a must, but an advantage.
Drosera capensis is a recommended carnivorous plant that attracts attention in well-lit humid terrariums, paludariums and wabi-kusa.
