Description
The Round-leaved sundew is the best known and most widespread Drosera species. It is found in cold to temperate Europe, North and East Asia and North America, as well as in some high mountains in South-East Asia. This carnivorous plant grows in bogs, swamps and damp heaths on nutrient-poor, acidic, more or less wet peat or sandy soil, often together with peat mosses (Sphagnum), usually in full sun. The round, long-stemmed catch leaves sit in a 3 - 5 cm wide rosette. This can produce an inflorescence about 5 to 25 cm high with white flowers. The light green leaf blade is densely covered with light red tentacles with a sticky secretion droplet. In the wild, the plant overwinters in the form of a hibernacle (winter bud) that sprouts in spring.
Like other sundew species, Drosera rotundifolia needs a nutrient-poor, acidic, moist to wet substrate, e.g. carnivorous plant soil. Plenty of light is recommended. According to its origin, this species should not be kept too warm. Cold overwintering at around 1 - 10 °C is favourable.
Drosera rotundifolia is a special piece of jewellery with its round leaves covered in red tentacles. This sundew is particularly suitable for set-ups that are modelled on a raised bog biotope.
