Description
Drosera slackii, native to the coastal regions of South Africa, belongs to the sundew family. This carnivorous plant thrives in moist, nutrient-poor soils and prefers high humidity and moderate temperatures. It is characterised by its round leaves covered with sticky tentacles, which can reach up to 5 cm in diameter. These tentacles secrete a sticky substance that attracts and traps insects. The plant thrives best at temperatures between 18 and 25 °C and requires plenty of light, preferably indirect sunlight.
For terrarium cultivation, Drosera slackii is particularly well-suited for small to medium-sized terrariums. The striking sticky leaves and bright red tentacles make it a visual highlight. It requires a moist, acidic substrate, ideally a mix of peat and sand. Regular watering with distilled water or rainwater is essential to maintain constant moisture. Drosera slackii produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are typically pink to white and appear on long stalks above the foliage. This plant is not only decorative but also helps to control pesky insects in the terrarium.
