Description
This orchid is widespread in South America, from Venezuela to northern Argentina. It is very variable, there are forms with different flower shape and colouring. The plant we carry is usually called Epidendrum floribundum in the trade and has greenish and pinkish flowers. Epidendrum paniculatum grows as an epiphyte on tree branches in tropical regions with dry seasons. Many ascending, horizontal to drooping shoots develop from a rootstock with thick, green adhesive and aerial roots. They can grow up to 1 m long, but usually remain much shorter, and have 10 - 15 dark green, lanceolate leaves about 7 - 15 cm long. The branched inflorescences usually appear in autumn and winter, with many fragrant flowers. These are 2,5 cm wide, have narrow, spatulate greenish petals and the lip in the centre of the flower has a pink mark on a white background.
Epidendrum paniculatum is a decorative perching plant for tropical terrariums that are not too small, especially those with a drier phase in winter.
