Description
This dwarf, small-leaved orchid with peculiar flowers is widespread in Central and South America, from Mexico to Bolivia. It grows as an epiphyte in humid mountain forests and cloud forests, at altitudes of about 400 to 1.800 metres. Creeping shoots with long, greenish-grey aerial and adhesive roots form ascending side shoots about 5 cm long. These are densely covered with 4 - 13 ovate-lanceolate, thick, dark green to reddish leaves up to about 2,5 cm long. A flower that is large in relation to the plant appears at the tips of the shoots. This has light greenish-brownish, narrow petals and a large, curved lip that is brown-red in the lower part.
Epidendrum porpax is a small, pretty perching plant for not too warm rainforest terrariums that wants to be seen up close and is also suitable for small containers.
