Description
Epidendrum radicans is a magnificently flowering wild orchid that is native from Mexico across the Central American land bridge to Colombia and Venezuela. Unlike other Epidendrum species, it does not grow in nature as an epiphyte on trees, but on soil and rocks (epilithic). It occurs at around 900 - 2500 metres, often in open areas between grasses and rocks and on roadsides at the edge of oak-pine forests and mountain rainforests. This orchid usually blooms between autumn and spring and typically has bright orange flowers with a yellow lip. The cultivar 'Pink', on the other hand, has purple-pink flowers with a white and yellow lip. The plant forms a rhizome with upright to arching, somewhat reed-like shoots densely covered with oval to elliptical, leathery leaves. The shoots can grow to a height of around 1 to 1.5 metres, but the height depends very much on the growing conditions. The shoot tips can form roots and new rhizomes on the ground. Dense, umbel-like inflorescences form at the tips of the shoots with a number of flowers that open one after the other.
The "Reed orchid", as Epidendrum radicans is also known after its somewhat reed-like stems, is a hardy and adaptable orchid species that is suitable for various tropical and subtropical terrarium types. It can be kept as an epiphyte, but according to its origin it is best treated as a ground plant or rock-sitter (lithophyte). Its densely and regularly leafy shoots, which are at least 30 cm tall, make an interesting sight in a bright spot in terrariums that are not too small, and this orchid is particularly attractive during the flowering period with its dense purple-pink flower clusters.
