Description
The Pothos is one of the most popular houseplants, not least because it is surprisingly undemanding. Native to the Pacific archipelago of the Solomon Islands, this aroid has been distributed in several cultivars with differently coloured and marked leaves, also as a garden plant in the tropics and subtropics. The cultivar Epipremnum aureum 'Neon' has bright yellow-green leaves, the youngest leaves are the lightest. It is also mistakenly traded as Philodendron scandens 'Neon' and Epipremnum pinnatum 'Neon'. Like many climbing plants, Epipremnum aureum has a juvenile form and a different-looking adult form, and only in the latter does it flower and fruit. The stems are then much thicker, the leaves large and slashed like a monstera. In the room and terrarium, however, it usually remains in the juvenile form. The shoots grow several metres long and branch little. Normally the Pothos is an adhesive root climber, but not under dry indoor conditions, it must then be attached to the support. Otherwise it also grows hanging and creeping on the ground.
Epipremnum aureum grows in pretty much any loose soil that should neither dry out nor become waterlogged. Likewise, Pothos thrives in hydroponics, the roots can simply hang in the water. When well established, the plant can be given a houseplant fertiliser. Although it originates from the tropical rainforest, Pothos tolerates dry air. It still grows in very little light, but especially varieties with less chlorophyll, like 'Neon', like it brighter and then show more beautiful colours. Temperatures are best at at least 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for a long time. In a moist environment the roots will attach themselves to the support, otherwise the shoots must be attached where they are to climb. Propagate by head cuttings and partial cuttings; stems lying on the ground will take root at the nodes.
The "Neon Pothos", as this cultivar is also called, is an easy, robust terrarium plant that stands out with its bright hue especially among dark plants and materials, both in rainforest and drier terrariums. It can be used climbing, hanging or as a ground cover.
