Description
The India rubber tree is one of the best-known houseplants. This large-leaved fig species is native to tropical Asia, from north-east India to Indonesia. It has nothing to do with the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), but its latex, the milky sap, was also used under the name Assam rubber. In the tropics, Ficus elastica grows to a height of about 20 to 40 m with a thick trunk and many aerial roots. Under indoor and terrarium conditions, however, its growth is only moderate and can be limited by pruning. There are several varieties of rubber tree. 'Dunkellaubig' has relatively small, glossy leaves with a very dark green shade.
Ficus elastica grows in any well-drained soil. This should be kept fresh to moderately moist and should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. When the rubber tree is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. The light requirement is not high, strong lighting or sun can be tolerated. The temperature range is very wide, from about 10 to 29 °C.
Ficus elastica 'Dunkellaubig' ("Dark-leaved") looks splendid in larger terrariums, best as a solitary. The Rubber tree originates from tropical mountain forests and is therefore ideal for humid, only moderately warm environments, but tolerates dry air. Its large, dark, glossy foliage emphasises the jungle atmosphere and contrasts with small-leaved and lighter-coloured plants.
