Description

The Rubber tree, a large-leaved evergreen fig species from the tropical rainforests of Asia, has long been a popular houseplant and is also ideal for larger terrariums. Among the various ornamental cultivars of Ficus elastica are also those with white leaf markings, which are traded as 'Variegata', 'Doescheri' and 'Tineke', among others. Young leaves of such forms can also show pink tones, but are not as distinctly reddish as those of Ficus elastica 'Ruby', which is also often traded as 'Variegata'.

The robust species Ficus elastica from the mulberry family (Moraceae) is a tall tree in the tropics and subtropics that develops fig fruits around 1 cm long that are barely edible. As a houseplant and terrarium plant, it forms stems with few branches and is unlikely to bear fruit. Its height can be limited by pruning, which also encourages branching. The Rubber tree prefers bright locations with indirect light. Variegated forms such as 'Variegata' and 'Ruby' are somewhat more light-requiring than pure green forms, as their leaves contain less chlorophyll. Although the species originates from rainy areas with high humidity, it is resistant to dry air. It has no special requirements for the substrate, but it is best if it is rich in humus and well-drained. It requires moderate watering, but waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. Once it is well established, it can be fed with a green plant fertiliser.

In terrariums that are not too small, Ficus elastica 'Variegata' makes a striking accent with its eye-catching, large, white, light and dark green spotted leaves. The glossy leaf surface and oval leaf shape also make it a real eye-catcher. Its robustness and ability to reach a considerable size allow it to serve as a structuring element in larger terrariums, where it can provide shade areas for smaller plants and also climbing and hiding places for animal terrarium inhabitants. The rubber tree and its varieties are suitable for both rainforest and drier tropical terrarium types.
