Description
The Mini climbing fig is an attractive small-leaved form of Ficus pumila. This rather rarely available climbing plant is listed under names such as Ficus pumila var. minima, F. pumila var. minuta and Ficus scandens. However, the latter name is also used in the trade for Ficus sarmentosa var. thunbergii.
At around 1.5 cm long, the heart-shaped leaves of Ficus pumila ‘Minuta’ are significantly smaller than those of the juvenile stage of the normal climbing fig, where they are around 2.5 to 3 cm long. The Mini climbing fig also grows more slowly. However, it is also a climbing shrub that, like ivy, covers objects with a dense mat and holds on with adhesive roots.
The species Ficus pumila originates from the warmer regions of East Asia, south to Vietnam, and grows several metres high on trees and rocks. Under favourable conditions, the Climbing fig reaches a mature stage with larger leaves on which the fruit develops, but as a houseplant and terrarium plant it normally remains in its juvenile form. The leaves are reddish-brown when they emerge and later turn a medium to dark green colour. If the shoots are unable to climb, they grow creeping on the ground.
Ficus pumila is generally easy to care for and has no special requirements for the soil, which should just be loose and rich in humus. We recommend a moderately bright location for the Mini climbing fig, but without direct sunlight for daylight cultivation. Although Ficus pumila tolerates dry air, high humidity is recommended. The Climbing fig is sensitive to drying out and should be watered regularly. However, waterlogging must be avoided. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed occasionally with a fertiliser for green plants. Guide the shoots to objects that they should climb up or tie them to. The roots can only attach themselves poorly to very smooth surfaces. This subtropical plant can overwinter in cool but frost-free temperatures or be kept at tropical temperatures above 20 °C all year round.
Even the ‘normal’ form of the climbing fig is ideal for terrascaping. The miniature form, Ficus pumila ‘Minuta’, with its small leaves and slower growth is perfect for small terrariums. It climbs branches, trunks, rocks and walls, but can also be used as ground cover. If necessary, it can be shaped by pruning or the growth can be steered in the desired direction. Although the Climbing ficus is primarily a plant of subtropical humid forests, where there is a cooler winter season, it is also suitable for tropical rainforest terrariums that are warm all year round.
