Description
The nerve plant or mosaic plant, also known as Fittonia verschaffeltii and F. argyroneura, is native to the rainforests of South America and belongs to the huge Acanthus family. There are many colourful cultivars of Fittonia albivenis. 'Forest Flame' is particularly strikingly coloured. The lanceolate leaves are a partially net-like pink-red colour with dark green edges. The underside has a whitish net pattern on a green background. The leaves are about 4 cm long and 1.2 cm wide. The plant grows bushy and up to about 10 cm high.
Fittonia albivenis grows well in loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that is kept moderately moist. It is sensitive to drought, but the soil must not become waterlogged. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. High humidity above 60 % is favourable. The temperature range is around 16 to 28 °C. Fittonia is a semi-shade plant and is best kept in moderately bright light, but not in full sun if grown in daylight.
The Red nerve plant 'Forest Flame' is a striking bottom plant for rainforest terrariums and other closed containers such as bottle gardens and biOrb. It forms a carpet with its spreading shoots over time. Extremely colourful plantings are possible together with other Fittonia albivenis varieties such as 'White' and 'Pink'.
