Description
This small, variegated ground plant is also known as Fittonia verschaffeltii and F. argyroneura. It originates from rainforests in South America and belongs to the huge Acanthus family. In this family are many tropical plants with striking leaf colouring and markings. There are several selections of the Mosaic plant. Fittonia albivenis 'Red' or "Rot" has a broad pinkish-red vein pattern on a green ground. The leaves are fringed with green.
Fittonia albivenis grows well in loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that is kept moderately moist. It is sensitive to drought, but the soil must not become waterlogged either. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. Higher humidity above 60 % is favourable. The temperature range is about 16 to 28 °C. The Fittonia is a semi-shade plant and is best placed in bright light, but not in full sun if grown in daylight.
The Red nerve plant is an ideal floor plant for rainforest terrariums and other closed containers such as bottle gardens and biOrb. It forms a carpet with its spreading shoots over time. Very colourful plantings are possible together with other Fittonia albivenis varieties such as 'White' and 'Pink'.
