Description
Fontinalis antipyretica var. gigantea is a large-growing, vigorous variety of the Greater water-moss or Willow moss, Fontinalis antipyretica. It is found the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, e.g. Europe, and in nature usually inhabits calm waters such as lakes and ponds. This unusually large water moss is densely leafy, branches quite strongly and thus forms impressive lush, dark green bushes that are somewhat reminiscent of a conifer. Under strong lighting, the moss can take on a golden-green hue. The individual shoots can grow to almost 1 cm thick under optimal conditions.
The Giant willow moss is ideally suited for cold water aquariums with temperatures up to approx. 20 °C. However, it also thrives in moderately temperate tropical aquariums, best with CO2 addition and complete macro- and micronutrient supply. In our experience, however, permanently high temperatures of over 26 °C are unfavourable. Fontinalis antipyretica var. gigantea gets by with little light, but develops most beautifully in medium to high light levels with a good supply of CO2 and nutrients. Growth can be relatively fast for a moss. It can be propagated simply by cutting off the branching shoots.
Fontinalis antipyretica var. gigantea works best when it is tied up on wood or stones or when the individual shoots are tied together in clumps. However, this moss does not attach itself to the substrate. You can attach the moss bushes to suction cups and attach them to the back wall of the aquarium, or tie them to branches of root wood to imitate a tree.
Fontinalis antipyretica var. gigantea is one of several varieties of the common willow moss. This strong moss grows especially large and is mainly found in stagnant or slow-flowing waters, e.g. in shaded lakes in the woods.
In comparison with varietys of F. antipyretica found in flowing water, F. antipyretica var. gigantea has larger, wider leaves with a more obtuse tip that grow at wider angles on the stem.
