Description
This medium-sized tropical rainforest bromeliad, Goudaea ospinae is native to Colombia. It is now classified as Goudaea, but often still traded as Vriesea ospinae. In nature it occurs as an epiphyte on trees. Goudaea ospinae forms an erect, short stem that is densely covered with rosette-like leaves. The leaves grow to about 18 - 25 cm long. They are light to medium green with fine darker green cross-strokes. In nature, the plant collects rainwater in the narrowly funnel-shaped shoot tip and leaf axils, which it takes up with suction scales at the leaf base. The spike-like, branched inflorescence is light yellow. After flowering, the respective leaf rosette dies off, but growth continues through offsprings (pups) at the base. The plant supplied in pot size S is about 20 cm high and wide.
Rainforest bromeliads such as Goudaea ospinae absorb water and nutrients through their roots as well as through their leaves, so they are not purely "air plants" like most Tillandsias. If you tie them up on objects, they need a coarse, permeable substrate for epiphytes for their roots, which is kept slightly moist and should not dry out completely. They are sensitive to hard, calcium-rich water and should only be given soft water. Culture in pots or on the terrarium floor is also possible, but especially then stagnant moisture should be avoided at all costs, as it quickly leads to rot. The place should be bright, but not full sun for daylight cultivation. Spray the plants at least two to three times a week and also water the leaf funnel and the leaf axils. An orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering. Propagation is done by cutting off pups at the base when they are about a third or half as high as the mother rosette.
Goudaea ospinae is a recommendable, easy epiphytic bromeliad for rainforest terrariums that is versatile with its moderate size. When it comes into flower, it attracts attention with its bright yellow flower spikes. It is not only decorative on stems and branches, but also on rocks and back walls.
