Description
Guzmania 'Ice Cream' is a shade-tolerant member of the Bromeliad family, making it ideal for terrariums with warm and humid climates. This cultivar was bred from Guzmania lingulata var. minor, which is widespread from south-east Mexico to South America and occurs as an epiphyte in humid tropical climates. The rosette of leaves is about 12 - 20 cm high and 20 - 30 cm wide. The leaves have a creamy white longitudinal stripe in the centre.
This epiphytic plant prefers temperatures between 20 and 30°C and humidity levels of 50 to 90%. It thrives best in semi-shaded areas, such as a protected spot at a south or west-facing window. In terrariums, it can be mounted on the back wall or on branches, as it has no specific substrate requirements. It is important that its central cup always contains a small amount of water to ensure optimal hydration.
Due to its compact growth, reaching only 12 to 20 cm in height and 20 to 30 cm in diameter, Guzmania 'Ice Cream' is perfectly suited for smaller terrariums. The bright orange inflorescence stands out in stark contrast to the white to cream-coloured variegated leaves and retains its vivid colouring even in shaded conditions, adding a unique aesthetic to the terrarium. Guzmania 'Ice Cream' should be fertilised sparingly, ensuring it remains an attractive addition to any terrarium.
