Description
This plant with attractive large, palmately pinnate leaves is commonly known as Schefflera arboricola and is now classified as Heptapleurum. It is native to the islands of Taiwan and Hainan and grows in wet forests and along river banks. The Dwarf umbrella tree is an evergreen shrub up to 4 m tall, sometimes also an epiphyte on tree trunks. Under humid tropical conditions it forms aerial roots. As an indoor and terrarium plant, it remains much smaller and its growth can be kept in check by pruning.
The Dwarf umbrella tree is an extremely robust plant. It grows in any well-drained soil. This should be kept moderately moist and may become a little dry at times, but should not dry out completely. Waterlogging should also be avoided. When the plant is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. The light requirement is low, but a bright position leads to stronger growth.
Heptapleurum arboricola is an undemanding plant that grows large and is best suited for rainforest and also drier terrariums. Its upright, sparsely branched stems branch better when cut. Because it needs little light, the ray aralia is well suited to imitate undergrowth in tropical forests.
