Description
Jumellea arachnantha is an elegant medium-sized orchid from Madagascar and the Comoros. It grows as an epiphyte on trees in moist, seasonally dry tropical mountain forests at about 1200 to 1800 metres above sea level. This orchid forms fan-shaped bushes of ribbon-like leaves, 28 - 45 cm long and 3 - 6 cm wide, folded in the middle. The leaf tip is rounded with a notch. In late spring, a number of slender, up to 20 cm long inflorescences appear between the leaves, each with a 5 cm wide, white flower. This has narrow petals and a long spur, hence the species name J. arachnantha, "spider-flowered". The flowers emit a jasmine scent at night.
This orchid from islands in the Indian Ocean looks best as a mount in larger tropical terrariums with its lush, wide leaf bushes. During flowering season, it offers a special eye-catcher through the interplay of long, narrow leaves and many elegant white flowers.
