Description
The Long Beach primrose-willow is a quite small, narrow-leaved stem plant that is often falsely labeled Ludwigia arcuata in trade. As well as this species, it comes from wetlands of the Atlantic coastal plain in the southeastern USA. However it differs from L. arcuata by broader, narrowly lanceolate underwater leaves and a somewhat more compact growth habit when it grows submerged. The flowers, appearing on the terrestrial form, are shorter stalked and have narrower light yellow petals than L. arcuata. Ludwigia brevipes also resembles Ludwigia x lacustris but has longer internodes. The submerged plant shows reddish to orange-brown tones especially under strong lighting while it is rather medium green with low light. It has a bushy growth habit due to many side shoots.
Cultivation is not overly difficult, but this narrow-leaf Ludwigia looks best with stronger lighting, a good micro- and macronutrient supply and CO2 addition. Low nitrate levels together with relatively high phosphate levels enhance the reddish to orange-brown colour of the shoot tips. 22 to 26 °C are optimal, a temperature range of 12 to 28 °C is tolerated. Its growth is relatively fast, and occasional trimming supports its bushy growth. It is easily propagated by cuttings.
Ludwigia brevipes has the most effect when planted in a bush in the midground, also in the foreground when the aquarium is large enough. With its reddish tones, it contrasts especially well with freshly green plants such as Micranthemum umbrosum and Bacopa australis. This North American Ludwigia is also interesting for emersed setups such as paludariums and Wabi-Kusa. It grows creeping in its terrestrial form, developing a medium to dark green carpet with small light yellow flowers.
Ludwigia brevipes has its origins in the southeastern USA, where it grows in boggy areas along the Atlantic coas (Virginia, North and South Carolina).
This narrow-leaved Ludwigia is often erroneously sold under the name L. arcuata, with which it is easily confounded in its submersed form. Both plants can only be safely differentiated in their emersed flowering forms (please see description of Ludwigia arcuata). Whereas L. brevipes has smaller, narrower petals and hairless stems, the petals of L. arcuata are relatively large, and its stems are slightly hirsute.
Sufficient light (0.5 watts per litre or above) is the most important aspect when cultivating this plant submersed. Adding micro- and macronutrients is beneficial, especially if CO2 is injected. (read more)
