Description
Lutheria splendens, also Vriesea splendens or Flaming Sword, is a bromeliad from Venezuela and lives there in the rainforest regions. V. splendens owes its name to its striking inflorescence. The tall, flaming red spike bears yellow flowers. Up to 20 dark green striped leaves form a beautiful upright rosette. The stripes have a reddish to brown colouring. This makes the plant an eye-catcher in a large terrarium.
Like many rainforest bromeliads, Vrieseas absorb water and nutrients through both the roots and the leaves, so they are not purely "air plants" like most Tillandsias. The uptake via the leaves takes place through suction scales inside the leaf funnels, also called cisterns, with which they collect rainwater and organic waste in nature. If you tie them onto objects, they need a coarse, permeable substrate for epiphytes for their roots, which is kept slightly moist and should not dry out completely. They are sensitive to high calcium concentration and should only be given soft water. Culture in pots or on the terrarium floor is also possible, but especially then waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. If possible, let the substrate dry off from time to time. The place should be bright to half shady. Spray the plants at least two to three times a week and also add water to the leaf funnel. During the growth phase, which lasts from March to October, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added to the water every fortnight. Fertilisation is also recommended outside the growth period, but only every 5 weeks.
Vriesea splendens grows as a percher on branches and trunks, likewise it thrives on the bottom and in pots in loose, well-drained substrate. The leaf cisterns of Vriesea splendens hold a lot of water and are ideal for poison dart frog species that naturally breed in water-filled bromeliad funnels. After its impressive flowering, the plant forms pups at the base. These daughter plants can be separated when they are about a third or half as high as the mother rosette.
