Description

The Prayer plant is a tropical ground plant with an attractive pattern and coloring. It is also known as Calathea leuconeura, but recently it has been categorized under the genus Maranta. This herbaceous, evergreen plant, about 15 - 30 cm high, is native to Northern Brazil and grows there in the shady undergrowth of rainforests. Its long-stemmed leaves emerge from an underground rhizome with tuberous roots. They have a 10 to 15 cm long, slightly overhanging leaf blade. The variety 'Kerchoveana' has a row of large brown to dark green spots on each leaf half, while the rest of the leaf surface is light green. As a houseplant, this arrowroot rarely blooms; its inflorescences carry tiny white flowers.

Maranta leuconeura grows well in permeable, loose, nutrient-rich, slightly acidic soil. This soil should always be kept slightly moist. Drying out leads to unsightly consequences, as does waterlogging. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertilizer. Higher humidity of at least 60% is favorable; dry, drafty air promotes pest infestation and often leads to dry leaf edges. It is a half-shade plant with a medium need for light; very strong light leads to the fading of the leaf pattern. Temperatures around 23 to 25 °C are optimal; 18 °C should not be sustained for long periods. Ground cold should also be avoided. If the plant only receives daylight, it should be kept a bit cooler in the light-poor winter and not fertilized. Propagation is done by dividing the rhizome.

This magnificent plant from the Marantaceae family is often offered as a houseplant, but it thrives much better in a rainforest terrarium. Over time, it forms an impressive wide clump with many leaves.
