Description
Maxillaria tenuifolia is known as the coconut orchid because of the scent of its flowers. It usually grows epiphytically on trees, sometimes also on the ground, in humid tropical forests from Mexico to Costa Rica at low altitudes of up to 1500 metres. The plant grows to a height of around 30 - 40 cm. The rhizome is densely covered with flattened pseudobulbs, each of which has a long, narrow, grass-like leaf. As a result, this orchid forms dense grass-like bushes. In spring and summer, 5 cm long inflorescences, each with one flower, appear on mature pseudobulbs. The intensely coconut-scented, deep red flowers are up to around 5 cm wide and have a light yellow lip with red spots.
This species is considered an easy orchid suitable for beginners. It is suitable for perching on branches, stems, back and side walls in tropical terrariums and should be kept slightly drier during the winter months. It is best planted in such a way that its narrow foliage can hang over elegantly. During the flowering period, it forms a special highlight with its red, fragrant flowers.
