Description
Miltonia spectabilis is a medium-sized, magnificently flowering orchid that is native to the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It grows in the coastal rainforest (Mata Atlântica) at altitudes of around 150 - 850 metres as an epiphyte on trees. The rhizome is covered with flattened pseudobulbs, each of which has two light green, linear, keeled leaves with a blunt tip. A light, yellow-green colour of the leaves and pseudobulbs is normal for this species and is not a sign of nutrient deficiency. An inflorescence up to about 20 cm long appears between spring and autumn. The approx. 8 cm large pink flowers are somewhat reminiscent of pansies in shape.
The Pansy orchid is a pretty medium-sized epiphytic plant for rainforest and tropical mountain forest terrariums. With its light green leaf clusters and rather large pink flowers, it attracts attention on branches, trunks, back and side walls.
